Redefining Yourself Through Christ’s Perspective

Who Are You, Really?

Every day, we are bombarded with messages about who we should be. Society measures success by achievements, appearance, or popularity. Social media tells us to compare, compete, and conform.

But what happens when these worldly definitions collide with the truth of who God created us to be?

“Our true identity is not defined by the world—it’s defined by God.”

The Apostle Paul addresses this struggle in Philippians 3:4–11. Before knowing Christ, Paul placed confidence in his background, achievements, and religious credentials. Yet he realized that all of these “advantages” were nothing compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus.

Confidence in the Flesh vs. Knowing Christ

Paul contrasts two ways of defining identity:

  • Confidence in the flesh: Relying on personal achievements, family heritage, or social status.
  • Knowing Christ: Understanding that our true worth and identity are found in Him, not in worldly standards.

The world’s mirrors are often cracked and distorted, showing us a reflection that is incomplete or false. We chase recognition, wealth, or approval, only to feel empty when these things fail.

It is like a  person holding two mirrors—one cracked, reflecting the world’s view, and one clear, showing God’s truth.

The Confusion of Worldly Definitions

Many people live under the weight of expectations and labels that don’t align with God’s view. Career titles, grades, or social media clout may define us temporarily in society’s eyes, but they cannot define our eternal value.

“Worldly labels are temporary. God’s definition of you is eternal.”

When True Identity Begins

True identity is discovered when we know Jesus. Paul calls it “gaining Christ”—a transformative process where God redefines who we are from the inside out.

With Christ:

  • Failures do not define us
  • Society’s labels lose their power
  • Our worth is secure, unshakable, and eternal

Imagine standing between two mirrors:

  • One cracked, reflecting distorted worldly views
  • One clear, showing your true self as God sees you

Choosing Christ means looking into the clear mirror.
