Many have taken this verse to indicate that God always limits his salvific activity based on the attitude and faith of the hearers. But this cannot be true, because God is the one who grants people faith in the first place (Eph 2:8–9; Phil 1:29). Apparently God was withholding faith from those in Nazareth. And, since Christ chose to limit his miraculous activity to those who believed, he would do no miraculous works there. He could not because he would not. A mark of true power is when one has power over his power.
For instance, if a man held a gun to my head and told me to deny God, I would answer, “I can’t do that.” It is not as though I can’t form the words, but I will not do it. I cannot, because I will not. Likewise, Jesus could not because he would not.
