Sin is not a necessary quality of humanity; that is, it is not sinful to be human. Nor is it intrinsically necessary for humans to have sin. It is only humans in the line of Adam who have sin. Christ was not a part of that specific line, having escaped it through the virgin birth. Instead, Jesus is the “second Adam” (1 Cor 15:45) that is, a human without the taint of original sin, given opportunity to take the same test as Adam, the results of which would be imputed to his adopted progeny. Thus Hebrews 4:15 tells us that Christ was “tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.” This verse does not merely state that Jesus did not sin (though this is certainly true), but, more specifically, that he had no sin nature.
