What is meant by God is omnipotent?

By omnipotence is meant that, by his exhaustless power, God can do all things consistent with his character and will.

Job 42:2—You can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted.

Psalm 115:3—Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him.

Jeremiah 32:17, 27—Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you…. I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?

                        This attribute is manifested…

  1. Over all creation. Psalm 135:6—The LORD does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths.
  2. Over men and angels. Daniel 4:35—All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: “What have you done?”
  3. Over Satan. Job 1:12; Revelation 20:2, 10—Satan must ask God for permission to do things, and will ultimately be cast by God into hell.
  4. Over sin and depravity. Matthew 19:6—With God all things are possible.
  5. Over death. 1 Corinthians 6:14—By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also.
