What is the difference between Jesus as the Son of God and believers as sons of God (Rom 9:26; 1 John 3:1)?

In that we have participated in the new birth, all believers are relationally children of the God who gave us life and adopted us into the family of God. As such, we are relationally God’s sons and daughters and given the privileges of heirs. However, there will always be a qualitative distinction between Jesus and believers. He is the Son of God in a class by himself, a class to which we can never aspire. For that reason Jesus is called the “unique” Son of God (John 3:16), the only one of his kind, the “one and only Son.”
