What is the difference between preservation and providence of God?

Preservation is God’s upholding of the entire universe with all of its laws, properties, and processes. It is a conserving and maintaining impulse whereby God protects his universe from catastrophic harm and destruction. Providence is God’s power in bringing the movement of the universe to its predetermined goal. It is the outworking of God’s plan. It is a providing impulse whereby God supplies the needs of his creatures in keeping with his ultimate goals for the universe.
